During the sporophyte stage, the sporangium is a stalk in where spores are found. These spores develop from a fertilized egg in the center of the archegonium during the gametophyte stage. They remain attached to the gametophyte, and trigger the beginning of the sporophyte phase. The most common plants that utilizes a sporangium to hold their spores are moss and liverwort.
